Wella EIMI is the styling range from Wella Professionals, developed for hairdressers who want control over shape, hold and finish. The products help you build a style, set it and keep it in place, from soft texture to firm hold. The range covers clay, gel, hairspray, mousse, styling cream, styling paste and wax. Which one suits you depends on your hair type, your length and the finish you want.
Styling products differ in hold, shine and weight. Light products such as mousse and styling cream add shape and movement without making hair stiff. Clay and wax give a matt or natural finish with more definition. Gel and hairspray offer the firmest hold. Fine hair usually looks best with lighter formulas, as heavy products can weigh it down. Thick or coarse hair can handle more structure. Start with a small amount, because you can always add more but it is hard to remove the excess without washing. Styling products do not repair or treat hair. They shape it, and most need to be washed out thoroughly.
Clay gives hair a dry, matt finish with plenty of grip. It suits short to medium hair and styles that need definition and separation. Rub a small amount between your palms and work it through towel-dried or dry hair. It works well for textured crops, quiffs and tousled looks. Clay can feel dry on hair that is already brittle, so use it sparingly there. Wash it out with a clarifying or regular shampoo.
Gel is the choice when a style has to stay put all day. It is suited to slicked-back looks, defined partings and short cuts that need structure. Apply it to damp hair for a wet look or to dry hair for a more controlled finish. Too much can leave hair stiff or flaky, so build up gradually. A brush or comb helps spread it evenly.
Haarlak is the Dutch term for hairspray, and it is used to fix a finished style in place. Hold levels range from flexible to strong, so check what the product offers before you buy. Spray from about 25 to 30 centimetres away for an even layer. Holding it too close makes hair sticky and heavy. Brush it out before washing to remove buildup.
Hairspray works as a final step on updos, blow-dries and curls. Some sprays are designed for light, workable hold, others for firm and lasting results. Use a flexible spray if you want to restyle during the day, and a stronger one for formal looks. It does not protect against heat, so it does not replace a heat protectant. Apply it after styling, not before.
Hold the can upright and move it while spraying. For volume at the roots, lift sections and spray underneath.
Mousse is light and easy to distribute, which makes it popular for fine hair and for curls. Work a palm-sized amount through damp hair from roots to ends, then blow-dry or air-dry. It adds lift and grip without a heavy feel. Too much can leave hair crunchy, so start with a golf-ball-sized amount. Mousse gives shape, not conditioning.
Styling cream gives soft control and reduces frizz, which suits wavy and curly hair or a natural blow-dry. Styling paste offers more definition and a workable hold for short and medium lengths. Wax adds shine and separation, and it can be reshaped during the day. Choose cream for softness, paste for texture and wax for detail. If your hair is fine, use less of each product.
