What do you need for a good colour result?

Colouring is more than the colour itself. The result depends on the colour, the developer strength, the mixing ratio and the processing time. Permanent colours change the hair structure to lighten or deposit pigment for lasting results. Demi-permanent colours mostly deposit colour and are gentler, which suits toning, refreshing and covering a little grey. The developer (oxidant) activates the colour, and its percentage determines how much lift you get. Always follow the mixing ratio of the specific product and do a strand test if you are unsure. Aftercare matters too, because coloured hair loses pigment faster when it is dry or washed with harsh products.

Permanent colour: Illumina Color and Koleston Perfect ME+ Deep Browns

Permanent colour is the choice for full grey coverage and noticeable changes in shade. Illumina Color is a permanent colour used for clear, luminous shades. Koleston Perfect ME+ Deep Browns is a specific selection for rich brown tones. Both need to be mixed with a developer, so check the right strength for your goal. Colouring at home is possible, but for big colour jumps or lightening a salon visit is the safer option.

Demi-permanent colour: Color Touch Plus and Color Touch Special Mix

Color Touch Plus is a demi-permanent colour for toning, refreshing and blending in a small amount of grey. It deposits colour without lightening the natural hair. Color Touch Special Mix is meant for adjusting or intensifying shades within the Color Touch range. This type of colour fades gradually rather than leaving a regrowth line, which makes it more forgiving. It will not lighten dark hair and is not designed for full coverage of a lot of grey.

Good to know

Demi-permanent colour works best on hair that is already close to your target shade. If you want a much lighter result, you will need a lightening product first.

Developers: Welloxon Perfect 4% Cream Developer

A developer is needed with most colours, and the percentage matters. Welloxon Perfect 4% Cream Developer is a lower strength, suited to deposit-only colouring and gentle toning rather than strong lightening. Higher percentages give more lift but are harsher on the hair. Use the developer that matches your colour and the mixing ratio given for it, and never reuse leftover mixed product.

Aftercare: Ultimate Color Shampoo and Conditioner

Wella Ultimate Color Shampoo and Ultimate Color Conditioner are made for coloured hair, to help keep colour in the hair for longer. Use them as a pair: shampoo to cleanse, conditioner in the lengths for smoothness. Wella Ultimate Color Shine Spray adds shine as a finishing step. Care products help maintain colour but cannot restore pigment that has already washed out. Washing with lukewarm water and not too often also helps.

Perms and straightening products

The range also includes perm lotions and straightening creams for different hair conditions, such as Wella Natural Perm Lotion, Wella Colored Perm Lotion and Wella Perm Lotion Sensitized. For straightening there are creams for colored and sensitized hair. A neutralizer is a required second step, which is why Wella Perform Perm Neutralizer and Wella Perform Straightening Cream Neutralizer are included. Choose the lotion that matches the current state of the hair. These are chemical treatments, so follow the instructions exactly and avoid using them on very damaged hair.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between permanent and demi-permanent hair colour?
Permanent colour such as Illumina Color can lighten the hair and gives lasting results. Demi-permanent colour such as Color Touch Plus deposits colour only and fades gradually.
Do I always need a developer with hair colour?
Yes, most professional colours must be mixed with a developer, for example Welloxon Perfect 4% Cream Developer. Check the colour instructions for the right strength and mixing ratio.
Can I lighten dark hair with Color Touch Plus?
No. Demi-permanent colour does not lighten natural hair. It only tones or adds colour, so for a lighter result you need a lightening product first.
How do I keep my hair colour looking fresh longer?
Use a shampoo and conditioner for coloured hair, such as Wella Ultimate Color Shampoo and Conditioner, and wash with lukewarm water. Avoid washing too often.
Is it safe to colour my hair at home with professional products?
It is possible if you follow the instructions and do a strand test. For big colour changes, lightening or damaged hair, ask a hairdresser for advice first.
