The Blondifier Ingredients

We took a look at the packaging of L'Oréal Blondifier side by side, compared the ingredient lists and it showed that there are 3 ingredients recurring in each product:

• Euterpe Oleracea Fruit Extract
• 2-Oleamido-1,3-Octadecanediol
• Maltodextrin

Unfortunately, L'Oréal could not explain the 3 ingredients, so we did some research on our own. Should we have drawn wrong conclusions according to you, we would of course love to hear about it!

Euterpe Oleracea Fruit Extract is better recognized as extract from the açai berry. As the packaging describes, it is the polyphenols from this extract that benefit your blonde hair. But what are polyphenols? According to Nutrition Center, these are substances that can improve health but that you don't necessarily need. They come from vegetables, fruits, nuts and even more types of foods and are mostly known for their antioxidant properties.

But okay. This concerns food... You don't eat a shampoo, conditioner or hair mask with polyphenols right? So how does this work when used topically?

The only scientific study we could find showing that Euterpe Oleracea Fruit Extract might contribute as an antioxidant and hair restorer is this study Photoprotective Effects of a Multifunctional Hair Care Formulation Containing Botanical Extracts, Vitamins, and UV Filters.

2-Oleamido-1,3-Octadecanediol is a synthetic ceramide. When your hair is chemically treated (such as blonding), the surface is quickly damaged and the oils (or ceramides) that are in your hair disappear or diminish. By putting ceramides in hair products, you can replenish this. This makes the surface smooth again and hair cuticles can work better again (think of it as a rusting, sticky hinge versus an oiled hinge).

What we read here is that synthetic ceramides tend to be higher concentrated and thus are absorbed faster by the hair. So 2-Oleamido-1,3-Octadecanediol is a good addition in the product anyway if you have bleached hair :).

Maltodextrin is a powder extracted from corn. In food it is often used as a binding agent, but in hair care Maltodextrin has a thickening effect (source: EWG). It wraps a layer, so to speak, around each individual hair, increasing its diameter. So that's how your hair looks fuller!

So the polyphenols from açai berry extract should help repair your hair and protect it as an antioxidant. 2-Oleamido-1,3-Octadecanediol serves as a conditioning agent to repair and smooth the hair surface. Maltodextrin makes your blonde hair a little fuller.

Do all Blondifier products contain purple pigment?

No. Only the Cool Shampoo contains the synthetic pigment "CI 60730 / Acid Violet 43." This gives a Cool Shampoo a purple color. The rest are transparent or white. However, the Gloss Shampoo does contain the pigments "CI 19140 / Yellow 5" and "CI 14700 / Red 4." We expect these were added to emphasize the warm color of highlights.

Okay. I'm a blonde. What should I use?

Now that Blondifier has made its entrance, there are several products you can use on white, gray and blonde hair. Below is a handy chart advising what hair color and effect you should use a particular L'Oréal product for:

Either:

• The L'Oréal Silver Shampoo has blue pigments, has a cool effect on gray and white hair and gives a matte finish.
• The L 'Oréal Color Corrector Blondes has slightly purple pigments, offers a neutralizing (anti-Yellow) effect for blond hair in the ends and gives a matte finish.
• The L'Oréal Blondifier Cool Shampoo has purple pigments, offers an ultra cool effect for blond hair ánd has a shiny finish.
• The L'Oréal Blondifier Gloss Shampoo has no pigments, is ideal for highlights and provides a glossy finish.

The Blondifier Conditioner, Mask and Bestie are mainly distinguished by their caring effect. The conditioner is for thin to normal hair and the mask is better suited for normal to thick hair. Of course, you can use the mask as a weekly treatment if your thin to normal hair is a bit more damaged.
