Leave-in conditioner curls

A leave-in conditioner is similar to a normal conditioner. The difference is mainly that you don't rinse it out. Your hair is nourished, hydrated, protected and the hair cuticles closed. This leaves you with combable, shiny, soft and frizz-free hair. A leave-in conditioner goes just a step further than a conditioner. It has a long-lasting nourishing but also protective effect. A leave-in conditioner can easily be used as extra care between washes. Have you been using a leave-in conditioner for a while but notice that your curls have become a bit limp or that your hair looks oily? Then leave-in conditioner is probably not suitable for your hair type, or you are using a product that is not suitable for your hair type.

Deep Conditioner

One way to care for your curls is deep conditioning. What does this entail? With a special conditioner you moisturize your curls intensively and make them more elastic. It also improves the moisture content of your hair. This is ideal when, for example, you have curls that easily get tangled or are difficult (or even impossible) to get through with a comb or brush. Also, if you have dry or frizzy hair, or suffer from hair breakage, deep conditioner is a lifesaver for you!

Normal conditioners contain a lower concentration of active ingredients than deep conditioners. In addition, curls are naturally drier than straight hair. The oils produced by your scalp take longer to reach the ends of your curly hair. To keep your hair well hydrated and nourished, a deep conditioner is ideal.

How do you use deep conditioner?

With deep conditioning, you do not wash your hair beforehand with a normal conditioner. You only wash your hair with shampoo. Your hair cuticles need to be open so that all the valuable ingredients reach their target. Washing your hair with conditioner actually closes your cuticles.

In addition, remove debris well. This is essential if you want to strengthen your curls. If you do not do this, deep conditioning will have no effect because the product cannot penetrate your hair.

So what are the steps you need to go through? The complete step-by-step plan for caring for curly hair is shown below:

  1. Wash your hair with shampoo and then do not use normal conditioner.
  2. Make sure the excess water is out of your hair (this does not have to be done with a towel, your hair may still be wet).
  3. Divide your hair into equal sections so you don't skip any pieces.
  4. Apply the deep conditioner to each section and squeeze or massage it into your hair.
  5. Start at the ends and work up to the roots and crown. Do you have certain parts of your hair that need some extra love? Massage the deep conditioner deeper into these areas.
  6. Leave in for 20 to 30 minutes.

Heat your hair. A blow dryer can damage your hair, so put a shower cap (or dryer cap) over your head and wrap a towel around it. The heat opens the hair cuticles and the deep conditioner ingredients are absorbed even better.
When your hair has cooled down, wash it out with cold water. The cold water allows your hair cuticles to close again, giving your hair more shine.

How often to use deep conditioner

When you deep condition too often, your hair weakens and becomes over-hydrated. Your curls then look limp and lifeless. Your hair will also break more easily. Once every 1 or 2 weeks should be enough to give your hair the best desired effect. So don't use it as a leave-in conditioner either.

You can even use regular conditioner, as long as you pay attention to the ingredients. Do your curls need more protein or more hydration? Depending on this, choose which deep conditioner suits your hair. A good deep conditioner feels like a rich, thick cream. It is also wise to choose a conditioner that contains coconut oil, olive oil, shea butter or avocado oil. These oils have molecules small enough to penetrate your hair and nourish it intensely.

What is the difference between deep conditioner and leave-in conditioner?

Both are perfect for curls and moisturize, protect and condition. The difference is that a leave-in conditioner is not rinsed out and a deep conditioner is. In addition, you heat your hair with deep conditioning and not with leave-in.
