Paula Kent co-founded Redken Laboratories and began her career as an actress in the 1950s. At that time, hair was heavily bleached which had a great impact on Paula's fine hair and sensitive skin. Due to allergic reactions to the products used on set, Paula decided to take action. She tried to find a solution with hairdressers and dermatologists, but no one could help her. This was the moment Paula wanted to start helping other people who were experiencing the same problems. She decided that high-quality products needed to be developed and that hairdressers needed more knowledge.

The formulas of the Redken products

So Paula, together with her hairdresser Jheri Redding, began three products and an education program for hairdressers. The products were developed with formulas that consisted of 3 principles;

• Protein technology
• An acidic pH of 4.5-5.5
• The products were to be recommended only by licensed cosmetologists

Through these formulas, Paula revolutionized the professional hair care industry. By the way, the name Redken is derived from the names of the founders, Paula Kent and Jheri Redding.
