How does a Medik8 serum work

A serum is a lightweight, concentrated formula that sits between cleansing and moisturising in a skincare routine. Because the texture is thin, active ingredients such as vitamin C, retinal or hyaluronic acid can penetrate the skin more efficiently than in a heavier cream. Vitamin C serums mainly target dullness and uneven tone, while retinal serums are used to support skin renewal and texture. Hydrating serums, based on ingredients like B5 or hyaluronic acid, are meant to replenish moisture rather than treat pigmentation or fine lines. Serums are usually applied in small amounts, patted rather than rubbed in, and followed by a moisturiser to lock in the actives. Not every serum suits every skin type: retinal formulas in particular need to be introduced gradually, especially on sensitive or reactive skin.

Vitamin C serums for dull, uneven skin

Vitamin C is one of the most researched ingredients for brightening the skin and improving overall radiance. C-Tetra Serum is Medik8's entry-level vitamin C formula, suited for those new to active skincare, while C-Tetra Luxe Serum offers a richer, more concentrated version for drier or more mature skin. Both are best used in the morning, followed by an SPF, since vitamin C can make skin more reactive to sunlight if left unprotected. Skin tends to look more even after consistent use over several weeks, though results build gradually rather than overnight.

Crystal Retinal for skin renewal

Crystal Retinal serums use retinaldehyde, a form of vitamin A that converts to retinoic acid faster than standard retinol. Medik8 offers a range of strengths, from Crystal Retinal 3 up to Crystal Retinal 20, allowing users to build tolerance step by step. Beginners are generally advised to start with a lower concentration such as Crystal Retinal 3 or Crystal Retinal 6 and use it a few nights a week before increasing frequency or strength. Retinal serums are applied at night only, since retinoids can increase sun sensitivity, and should always be followed by a moisturiser the next morning along with SPF.

Building tolerance safely

Introduce retinal gradually, two to three evenings a week at first, and pair it with a hydrating moisturiser to reduce dryness or flaking. Skipping straight to a high strength like Crystal Retinal 20 without prior use can cause irritation.

Hydr8 B5 for dehydrated skin

Hydr8 B5 is a hydrating serum built around vitamin B5 and hyaluronic acid, aimed at replenishing moisture rather than treating pigmentation or ageing concerns. It suits most skin types, including sensitive skin, and can be layered under a vitamin C or retinal serum to offset dryness. Hydr8 B5 Intense is a richer version for skin that needs more sustained hydration, such as in colder months or with central heating. It's worth noting that a hydrating serum on its own won't address dullness or fine lines; it works best combined with a targeted active elsewhere in the routine.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a vitamin C serum and a retinal serum together?
Yes, but generally not at the same time of day. Vitamin C serums like C-Tetra Serum are best used in the morning, while retinal serums such as Crystal Retinal 3 are meant for the evening.
Which Medik8 serum should I start with if I'm new to active skincare?
C-Tetra Serum or Crystal Retinal 3 are common starting points, since both offer a gentler introduction compared to their more concentrated versions.
Does Hydr8 B5 replace a moisturiser?
No, Hydr8 B5 is a hydrating serum, not a moisturiser. It's meant to be layered underneath a cream, not used as a replacement for one.
Can retinal serums cause irritation?
Yes, especially at higher strengths or when introduced too quickly. Starting with a lower concentration and building up frequency gradually reduces the risk of redness or flaking.
Do I need to use sunscreen with these serums?
Yes. Both vitamin C and retinal serums can increase skin's sensitivity to sunlight, so daily SPF is recommended regardless of which serum you use.
